Critical Literacy Group Work

This week for English we were asked to work in groups and fill in a document with the questions below. We were also asked to pick between two songs, the songs were Love The Way You Lie by Eminem ft Rihanna or Big Girls Cry by Sia. Lorelei and I chose Love The Way You Lie. We were then asked to pick three questions and then write a summary on the music video. This is what we have done.

Group work- Critical text analysis

Texts(s): Love The Way You Lie - Eminem Ft Rihanna
Topic: Critical Literacy
How did your group focus the analysis? (Which aspect did you select to critically examine?)
  • Inclusion
  • Exclusion
  • Representation
  • Multiple readings
Which critical literacy questions did your group select to analyse the text(s)?
23. How does the text depict age, gender and or cultural groups
19. Is the text fair
29. How does the text construct a version of reality?
Why did your group select those questions?
We both chose these questions because we think these questions will relate well to the text. We also chose these questions because we would be able to write about it in a way that we can represent the text in our own words
What did your group conclude from the critical analysis? (So what?)
We concluded that the text isn’t fair at all. At the start of the text it shows that the female protagonist wanted out in a toxic and abusive relationship while the male protagonist wouldn’t let her. She was about to leave after seeing that he had another females name and number on his hand as they were sleeping. She was made and decided to leave so she packed up and told him that she was going to leave. After hearing that he pushed her into a wall, started yelling at her, punched the wall beside her head and then realised what he had done. The text depicts adults that are in relationships aren’t always happy and have the stereotypical happy family lives that most people dream for. The text also depicts that males in this type of relationship are more towards the physical side while females are like rag dolls, when they act out of form then they get pushed around until they oblige with the males demands or requests. The text shows that stereotypically only white people suffer in toxic relationships when in reality any race, culture or gender can be toxic in a relationship. The text shows a version of reality that actually is real. Even though it isn’t completely accurate it is pretty close to some relationship in real life, some experience this everyday and at a much worse point.
What Am I Learning?
I am learning about how to use critical literacy in different ways
How Does This Show My Learning?
It shows my understanding about the topic and the fact that I am able to write everything in my own words.
What Am I Wondering?
I am wondering what other types of relationships can be toxic without the couple noticing about it.
