Conduction

This week for science we are learning about Conduction and Heat. We did an experiment that involved a ball and hoop. We heated up the hoop because it couldn't fit inside, after a few minutes we put the hoop onto the ball and watched it go through.Conduction is when an object has been in contact directly with heat. One of the ways conduction is shown is when you heat up a pot of water on a stove. The heat from the stove is going under the pot which is spreading it around the metal pot, the water then heats up because of the heat being spread around the pot and then it starts boiling because of the heat.

Science

For science we are able to choose what experiments we could be able to do. I chose to do a cool experiment that includes heat and water. The experiment is called a underwater candle experiment. I saw this experiment before and I thought it was cool so I decided to choose this as my chosen experiment.

Materials
Candle
Glass Cup
Lighter
Plate with higher rim
Water

Hypothesis: I think that the water rises because of the heat and pressure that the candle creates, when the candle burns out I think the pressure is released as it gets colder and the water rises because of the loss of pressure.

Method:

Put water inside the plate just before hitting above the rim.

Place a candle in the center of the water filled plate.

Light the candle

Place the cup around the candle

Wait for the candle to burn out and watch what happens

Here is a video of the experiment

Social Studies

For the past few weeks In Social Studies we have been learning about a lot of things. One of the main things we learnt about is the Black Death. The Black Death is a plague that had killed many without being noticed for a while. It is one of the most deadliest pandemics in the world. After learning about the black death we were given the task to compare it with another plague or disease. I chose to do the antonine plague because it seemed interesting to me. I compared the death count to the black death, and of course the black death had more than the Antonine plague. Although it was interesting and scary to find out that later on 2000 people a day got infected it was good to know that it might never come back ever again. We then worked on mapping and then natural and man made disasters. I chose to look at hurricanes and Hurricane Galveston. It was interesting to learn about it because scientists still don't know what the disease was and what caused it, all they know is that it came from around Central Asia.

Art

This term for Art we have been working on paining and different art styles. The first thing we did was create a concept drawing that we could use as our  final.  A concept drawing is ideas on what you could do but it's just a draft. We then started to draw our ideas onto paper and pick our final. We then drew it up and worked on colour tones, gradients and then started to undertone our artwork. After painting our undertone we then started to paint. so far I think it looks good. In my artwork I have used colour theory because it can help my artwork look good. I have used complementary colours like blue, purple and dark green.

Here is my why artwork so far

Api Taylor Performance

On Wednesday This week I along with some other students were given the opportunity to see a performance from the Poet Apirana Taylor. It was a very interesting thing to be able to see because it was unique. He shared some of his poems with us and performed with the poem. After the performance we went to a workshop that Apirana was holding. It was a really cool experience especially when we got to have a workshop from Api because he shared what he does when we creates a poem. I Enjoyed the performance, even though at times it was confusing when Api shouted at times. I liked how he always played instruments in front of us instead of having a soundtrack in the background and performing. I took some ideas about writing from the workshop that I might use later on.

Here is one of the poems that api performed for us, It's called Hinemoa's Daughter.

Textiles

This week for textiles we were asked to make paper cards with the paper we made a few weeks ago. It was a really fun activity because we were able to do it about anything. I chose to do mine about my sisters 21st birthday, My dads 53rd birthday, an adoration card, and an easter card. For my sisters birthday card I drew a card on a gold piece of paper and then cut it out to glue on the card, then I wrote some memories that we shared when I was younger. For my dads card I wrote happy birthday and then coloured a bunch of different things. For my easter card I drew a chick in an egg and then wrote happy easter, For my adoration card I wrote “I A Door You” and replaced the word door with a door and coloured it in rainbow. Here are the photos of the cards I made.

Textiles

A few weeks ago we had made recycled paper. It was really fun to make, especially when we were able to colour the paper. The first thing we did was pulp the newspaper with a hand mixer and added water in too. We then put it into a box so then we could make the paper. We then grabbed the watery pulp and then took a homemade paper maker that was just a photo frame and material that can take out water and took the water away from the pulp. we then took out the access water and then ironed the piece of paper to dry it quicker. I couldn't get any photos but it was a really fun activity to do. Here is the video that we watched to make the paper.
