This term for Social Studies we are learning about the Treaty of Waitangi. Even though we know a lot about the treaty we still don't know everything about what happened before and while the treaty was being signed. We were then asked to create a history road about five events that happened before the treaty was signed. This is what I have made.

Social Studies - Know Your Places
- Know Your Place -
For the past few weeks for Social Studies, we have been trying out a new tool called Prezi. Prezi is a site that helps you create a presentation and lets you write in it, it also can give templates for you to use and make your presentation look better. For us to understand the tool better we were given the task to find places around Christchurch and the Canterbury region that have importance to the region and places that are important to us.
I learnt quite a lot of new things that I never knew about Christchurch or Canterbury, for example, lytteltons history and how it actually helped shape Canterbury to how it is today. Finding out Hornby High Schools history was actually the most interesting thing as I didn't know much about the school before researching about it. I think next time we should be able to research places that are solely important to us because I feel like I want to know more about the places that are important to me and my childhood.

Social Studies - Egyptian Technology Essay
Today, human technology has changed over time, we have evolved from the stone age to having mechanical robots doing our jobs for us. Egyptian Technology has changed over time, some examples of things are Shadufs, which is a water-raising mechanism used for agriculture, Papyrus paper, which is paper which was created from the Papyrus plant, and Sundials, which tell the time. This all matters because it has helped evolve human technology as a whole, and was the base of many things we use today.
One of the things that the Egyptians helped create was the Sundial. A sundial is a device that tells the time of day using the sun and shadows. It has been debated on whether or not the Egyptians were actually the creators, but scientific research explains that the oldest Sundial up to now is one that was made in Egypt. The Sundial, which was created in the 13th century BC is a piece of technology that tells the time. When sundials were first made they were large objects that weren’t able to move, since its evolution it has become a small handheld object that is on phones and electronic devices. There are two different main types of sundials, The first one is the altitude dial. The altitude dial helps determine the sun's altitude or height of the sun above the horizon. They are quite hard to work with as they need to be aligned correctly with the sun. The other Sundial is the Azimuth Sundial. The Azimuth dial helps people determine the time by the sun's angle on the arc. They need to be orientated correctly, but sometimes they have a magnet inside to help.
How it works is there is a base which has roman numerals on to tell the time. There is something called a Gnomon, which is the part of the sundial which casts a shadow when the sun hits it. The sun casts a shadow and hits the base which has the roman numerals and covers them which tells the time. When the sun is at its highest point of the day or midday, the shadow is at its shortest place. When the sun is lower, in the afternoon the shadow is at its longest. You may think, why can’t I use a stick instead, if you try it out it wouldn’t actually work. The sun changes when a season changes as the earth axis changes the height of the sun, this means that you can’t use a stick as it wouldn’t be accurate.
Compared to before clocks now have become much more efficient as a pendulum is used instead of a Gnomon. They have also become smaller and more convenient for people these days to use. It has also become digital due to technological advancements and because cellular devices have become one of the biggest things used today. The difference between an ancient sundial and a clock is how they use the sun. A sundial uses the real sun and is quite accurate whereas a clock uses a makeshift sun, called a mean sun, which assumes to move orderly at all times of the year. This is only one thing that the Egyptians created that are still being used today in modern times.
Another thing that the Egyptians created was papyrus paper. Papyrus paper is an extremely early version of the paper that was used in life. This is important because it helped us get to our paper now, which is made with tree bark. Papyrus paper was made out of the Papyrus plant, which looks like little palm trees. The papyrus plant was used for many things for example sails, cloths, mats and cords. Instead of using the leaves of the papyrus plant instead, they used the root as it worked better than the thin leaves of the plant. Making papyrus paper is actually quite easy, all you need is papyrus plants, something to pound it down, water, and a burnisher, to make the paper smoother. The Egyptians would gather the papyrus plants, split the roots from the leaves, cut the roots in half, and then soak them in water for a day. They would then lay the roots across one another and pound them into strips. You would then soak it again for around three days, press it for three days and then burnish them with a smooth stone before it would be used. Compared to before the paper we use today is so much more different as we use tree pulp in the same way, but instead of pounding it down, we fit the tree pulp from water and let it dry for a day. The paper these days are also less time consuming as anyone at home can make paper in thirty minutes, instead of waiting for almost a week. This is another thing that the Egyptians have created that have still been used today.

Technology
Technology has changed peoples lives over time as it has helped people learn new things. This is important because improved technology has given humans chances to find things out that we wouldn’t have found out about unless we had modern technology. For example, we wouldn’t have known about space, other countries, and science. Earlier in time, people didn’t even know what space was or what our planet looked like. When technology had reached the space we soon found out that our sun was actually a star instead, and that there were millions of other stars and planets. We also wouldn’t know about other countries as we wouldn’t have travelled anywhere to know that civilization exists in other places. Now that we know that there are other countries, civilizations have joined together to become bigger places and societies. Without technology, scientists wouldn’t have a job and we wouldn’t even have the proper technology, without technology we would still be in the stone age times instead of being modern. These are only some examples of how technology has changed peoples lives today. Even though technology has reached quite a peak, it is still growing even bigger than it would be millions of years ago.

I didn’t realise that it is quite hard to actually become a Real Estate Agent as you have to get two diplomas and have to have three years of experience beforehand.

Matariki Vs Good Friday

- Good Friday is a holiday which commemorates the crucifixion and the death of Jesus Christ
- It is a holiday for Christians who respect their religion.
Why it should replace Good Friday

- Other countries like Hawaii and japan celebrate it too

DNA Testing
This week for social studies, we were asked to write about DNA testing and if we would take the chance to do one. I said yes because I would've liked to find out about my family. We were told to first plan the paragraph, then write the paragraph, and then get feedback and write a final version of the paragraph. I haven't gotten feedback yet but I do hope I do. DNA testing is when you give your DNA to check something out, it could be to check your genes, find out if you are actually part of your family etc. Some people think that DNA testing isn’t good while others think that it’s a good chance to find out information you wouldn’t even know about. If I had the chance to get DNA tested I would. I would try it out because I would like to know if I am actually Fijian, it would be interesting to find out if I wasn’t and what I would’ve actually been. I would also like to know how much of my ethnicity is true, am I actually Fiji-Indian or am I something completely different. If I took a test I would like to find out about my ancestors, my family don’t really know who our ancestors are and If a test could tell me it would be really fun to see with my family. I would also take a test to find out if I have distant relatives, I wonder if I ever had family that I never knew I would have, it would be interesting to find that out too. Sometimes DNA testing isn’t good as some companies violate your privacy to sell your information to other companies or governments, sometimes they can scam you if you don’t choose the right company. This is why you should be quite careful with the company you choose, always look at the reviews to see if they are legit or frauds. It’s still nice to try if I ever got the chance to because I could find out so much stuff that I might have never known of, it could make me aware of how cultural I could be. These are some reasons why I would like to try DNA testing, it would be a little weird to try out but it seems fun, especially when I could learn so much about myself.

Journey Towards a Better Life
A Filipino Migrant moved to New Zealand for the chance to get more opportunities. This matters because In the Philippines there is a big population and not enough money for everyone to live comfortably. You don’t get the opportunities you would get in other countries unless you moved. In the text, the migrant says that they were poor while living in Manilla. Since the Philippines is very populated, jobs that pay insanely well are hard to find, they were only earning around $15 a day. This meant that they couldn’t care for themselves or their child properly. They realised that the only way they could care for their child was if they went to school and got a better job. When they were able to move into New Zealand they found out that there were more opportunities that could benefit them and their child in the future, in the Philippines that wouldn’t be possible. After coming to New Zealand via a Visitors visa they realised that New Zealand was much better than the Philippines and couldn’t shake off the thought of living there. After moving here they were able to live more comfortable and safe than they would’ve in their own country. This is why this Immigrant moved to New Zealand, to get better opportunities for themself and their children. If they never came to New Zealand they would most likely still be in the Philippines wishing that they took the chance to leave.
Life for this Filippino Immigrant has been better since they came to New Zealand. This matters because when they lived in the Philippines they didn’t feel that safe. It also matters because life over in the Philippines isn’t as easy as it is in other countries. In the text, it is explained that it is not compulsory to send your child to school, if you want your child to work then you can do that and they can’t say a thing. The healthcare is also very bad, if you want to be looked at properly or at the same time you have to hire a private doctor as public doctors are very busy. Public hospitals are often busy as doctors are given no breaks and are often harassed, this makes doctors jobs much harder than before. In New Zealand the doctor-patient ratio is 1 doctor per 300 patients, in the Philippines, it is 1 doctor per 800 patients which is insane. Another thing is crime, In the Philippines robberies and murders constantly happen. You have to be very careful with your belongings as they can be stolen easily. So many murders and robberies take place that the news only picks the most threatening ones. This is very bad because many people lose important things or get hurt nightly. These are some reasons on why life has been better for this Immigrant since moving to New Zealand. They feel much safer in a different country than their own which is a big deal. They are glad they moved to New Zealand because if they didn’t they might not have been able to have the same future as they have now.

Jews In Nazi Germany
Since school has closed down due to COVID-19 we have transitioned to the school holidays, before that we were asked to do one last task for social studies. We were asked to create a presentation on a group of people who's Human rights have been violated, I chose to learn about Jews in Nazi Germany. I chose this because I thought it would be in interesting as I don't really know much about the holocaust and I wanted to know more. We were told that we had to research about them and answer some questions about them that would be in our final presentation. it didn't really take a long time to research but it was hard to put it into words that didn't seem like it was copied. Child Soldiers
For the past week for social studies we were given the task to choose something that was happening to kids around that Involved labour. I chose to do child soldiers. It look awhile to figure out what questions to ask but I was able to figure out what to write and how to add to them. Why is research important?Research is important because you need to get information from more than one site, you can get multiple opinions and you can go for the one that is mainly used and get your point across with more detail. It's also important because there might not be enough sites that can give you the right information, by looking at a lot you can find out what information is real and what isn't real.

Iqbal's Human Rights
Iqbal’s human rights were lost when his parents sent him off to pay a debt. At the age of four Iqbal was placed into a bonded labour program. He was sold off towards a master which took away his freedom, a human right that everyone should have. This affected him negatively as he wasn’t able to do as he wished and held against his will to pay off his parent's debt. Sent to a carpenter, Iqbal was forced to make expensive carpets for foreigners to buy. Because his hands were small and he worked fast he was forced to create the hardest designs that were set out. He later found out later that his debt never ended and he was going to work forever. His rights were taken away from him because he was sent off to a master to forcibly work. This made Iqbal change for the better as soon after he had started learning about his human rights after he had escaped a carpet factory. Iqbal’s rights were taken away from the moment he was given away. Iqbal’s human rights were taken away from him as a child because of his parents. This is also likely why Iqbal fought to stop child labour and bonded labour.

Harriet Tubman and The Underground Railroad
This week for Social Studies we were learning about Spirituals, Slaves and the Underground Railroad. We learnt about Harriet Tubman and what she did to help slaves in america escape torture. We were told to make a poster about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. I decided to make a little poster about who Harriet was and what she did to help slaves.
Harriet Tubman was born into slavery, In 1849 she escaped into freedom and became the most famous “conductor” for the Underground Railroad. She risked her life to save hundreds of slaves from the south.
The Underground Railroad is a system that Tubman used to carry enslaves people out into freedom. It was a network of people that helped fatigued slaves escape into Northern America and Canada. They hid people in Churches, Private homes and schoolhouses. Code names for the safe houses were commonly named as “Stations” Or “Depots”.
