Science - Atomic Science - Atoms

This week for Science we have started learning about Atomic Science, this week we learnt about atoms. Atoms are the smallest particle that a chemical can have, the world is made out of trillions of atoms, including ourselves.

Equipment
-1 Piece of card
-30cm of string
-Blue tac
-Two different coloured beads for Protons+ Neutrons

Method

- Pick an atom from 3-10 on the periodic table
- Find out how many Protons, Neutrons + Electrons it has
- Grab Equipment
- Roll the blue tac into a ball
- Stick P+N beads to blue tac
- Cut out rings from paper
- Draw Electrons onto rings
- Create a label
- Tape string to back of the paper so it can hang

Today we were tasked to create a model of an atom using blue tac, beads, paper, string and tape. It was hard at first because I didn’t really understand what it would look like but after a while, I figured it out. I first chose my element, which was carbon. Next, I figured out how many protons and neutrons were in the element. I found out that there 6 protons, 6 electrons, and 6 neutrons. You can find this out by looking at the numbers on the periodic table.

The number on top of the symbol is the atomic number, while the number at the bottom is the mass number. The protons and electrons are both the atomic number while the neutron is what is added with the protons to create the mass number. For example carbons atomic number is 6, this means that both the protons and electrons are 6, so something plus 6 must equal the mass number which is 12. 6 plus 6 equals twelve so the neutron must be 6.

After I figured this out I stuck 12 beads, 6 one colour, 6 another colour to the blue tac. I then cut out two rings from the pieces of paper to act as the “shells” of the atom. Net I drew in the electrons on the shells. In the first shell, there can only be two electrons so I drew two electrons on. In the next shell, you are able to have eight electrons, so I added in the rest of the electrons I needed to add in, which was four. I then created a label so then anyone looking could tell what it was. I then stuck string to the back of the rings, and the ball of blue-tac so then it could hang all together without falling off.

After making the atom we were asked what we would have to do to create an ion. An ion is a charged atom which either has a positive or negative charge. Protons have a Positive charge while electrons have a Negative charge. To figure out the charge you must check how many electrons are in the last outer shell. For carbon there are four electrons, you must then decide whether to take off the four or add six more electrons. You choose which one would be easier to do, in this case, it is easier to take away the four electrons. If you take out four electrons there are now more protons, which means it is now has a positive charge. You then add the number of electrons you have taken out to the positive charge. This means that a carbon atom has a positive charge of 4, it is normally written as a +4 charge.

Camera Techniques - Visual Dictionary

- What am I learning?
I am learning about camera Techniques

- How does this show my learning?
This shows my learning by being able to show some camera angles, shots and techniques and also being able to explain about what the shot is and how it is used.

 - What am I wondering?
How does someone determine is a shot is the right shot to use in a certain scene?

Visual and Sound Techniques - Kahoot

This week for English we have started learning about Film Study. Film study is studying a movie and also studying qualities about things that normally you wouldn't notice. We were tasked to create either a Crossword, a Pick-A-Path slideshow, a Kahoot, or a Dictionary about words that are related to visuality and sound in movies. I chose to create a Kahoot, it was kind of easy but it was harder to think about things to write as wrong answers. After a few days, I had gotten the meanings and some wrong answers and started to add photos, after that I had finished, created a copy just in case I lost the original and then I had finished. I can't actually share the Kahoot because it doesn't let me.

DNA Testing

This week for social studies, we were asked to write about DNA testing and if we would take the chance to do one. I said yes because I would've liked to find out about my family. We were told to first plan the paragraph, then write the paragraph, and then get feedback and write a final version of the paragraph. I haven't gotten feedback yet but I do hope I do. Here is what I have done so far.

-

YES OR NO: YES

WHY:
-Would like to find out if I am actually Fijian
-Want to know about my ancestors
-How much of my ethnicity is true
-Want to find out if I have distant relatives

-

PLAN
-What is DNA testing
-How it is done
-Agree
-Would like to find out if actually Fijian
-How much of my ethnicity is true
-My ancestors
-Distant relatives?
-It might not always be good
-Nice to try though
-Conclude

DNA testing is when you give your DNA to check something out, it could be to check your genes, find out if you are actually part of your family etc. Some people think that DNA testing isn’t good while others think that it’s a good chance to find out information you wouldn’t even know about. If I had the chance to get DNA tested I would. I would try it out because I would like to know if I am actually Fijian, it would be interesting to find out if I wasn’t and what I would’ve actually been. I would also like to know how much of my ethnicity is true, am I actually Fiji-Indian or am I something completely different. If I took a test I would like to find out about my ancestors, my family don’t really know who our ancestors are and If a test could tell me it would be really fun to see with my family. I would also take a test to find out if I have distant relatives, I wonder if I ever had family that I never knew I would have, it would be interesting to find that out too. Sometimes DNA testing isn’t good as some companies violate your privacy to sell your information to other companies or governments, sometimes they can scam you if you don’t choose the right company. This is why you should be quite careful with the company you choose, always look at the reviews to see if they are legit or frauds. It’s still nice to try if I ever got the chance to because I could find out so much stuff that I might have never known of, it could make me aware of how cultural I could be. These are some reasons why I would like to try DNA testing, it would be a little weird to try out but it seems fun, especially when I could learn so much about myself.

Journey Towards a Better Life

A Filipino Migrant moved to New Zealand for the chance to get more opportunities. This matters because In the Philippines there is a big population and not enough money for everyone to live comfortably. You don’t get the opportunities you would get in other countries unless you moved. In the text, the migrant says that they were poor while living in Manilla. Since the Philippines is very populated, jobs that pay insanely well are hard to find, they were only earning around $15 a day. This meant that they couldn’t care for themselves or their child properly. They realised that the only way they could care for their child was if they went to school and got a better job. When they were able to move into New Zealand they found out that there were more opportunities that could benefit them and their child in the future, in the Philippines that wouldn’t be possible. After coming to New Zealand via a Visitors visa they realised that New Zealand was much better than the Philippines and couldn’t shake off the thought of living there. After moving here they were able to live more comfortable and safe than they would’ve in their own country. This is why this Immigrant moved to New Zealand, to get better opportunities for themself and their children. If they never came to New Zealand they would most likely still be in the Philippines wishing that they took the chance to leave.

Life for this Filippino Immigrant has been better since they came to New Zealand. This matters because when they lived in the Philippines they didn’t feel that safe. It also matters because life over in the Philippines isn’t as easy as it is in other countries. In the text, it is explained that it is not compulsory to send your child to school, if you want your child to work then you can do that and they can’t say a thing. The healthcare is also very bad, if you want to be looked at properly or at the same time you have to hire a private doctor as public doctors are very busy. Public hospitals are often busy as doctors are given no breaks and are often harassed, this makes doctors jobs much harder than before. In New Zealand the doctor-patient ratio is 1 doctor per 300 patients, in the Philippines, it is 1 doctor per 800 patients which is insane. Another thing is crime, In the Philippines robberies and murders constantly happen. You have to be very careful with your belongings as they can be stolen easily. So many murders and robberies take place that the news only picks the most threatening ones. This is very bad because many people lose important things or get hurt nightly. These are some reasons on why life has been better for this Immigrant since moving to New Zealand. They feel much safer in a different country than their own which is a big deal. They are glad they moved to New Zealand because if they didn’t they might not have been able to have the same future as they have now.

Cloning

What is the process of cloning?A skin cell containing 46 chromosomes is taken from a male specimen. An egg cell (which contains only 23 chromosomes) is taken from a female specimen. The nuclei are taken from both cells by a micropipette. The skin nucleus from the skin cell containing all 46 chromosomes is inserted into the egg cell. The egg cell now has all the instructions to clone the male specimen. The egg cell is then surgically inserted into the female specimens womb. Nine months later a clone of the male specimen is born.

When could cloning be used for good?Cloning could be used for good by helping recreate some animals or creatures that are or are already extinct. it can help humans understand creatures that we were too late to discover.

When could cloning be used for bad?Cloning could be used for bad by forcing animals or people to have children. it could damage organs fatal for survival and lead to death. You could also use it on a creature, fail and create a deformed or mutant version of the creature.

Do you think cloning is a good idea? Why/ why not?I don't think cloning
